But no need to wait for us to start making progress. Here are a few ways to start getting ready today:
1. Decide on a research question.
A good research question is focused on a specific paternal line or mystery—something like:
- "Who was the father of my 3x great grandfather John Price?"
- "Where does my YDNA cluster fit within the broader Stott family tree?"
Clear, answerable questions give your DNA results direction.
2. Make sure you have access to YDNA results.
You’ll get the most out of the course if you have taken a YDNA test from FamilyTreeDNA*, or if a close relative is willing to share results with you.
3. Gather and organize your login information.
Write down the usernames and passwords for every kit you can access, especially those connected to your research question. This will save you loads of frustration later.
4. Consider upgrading to Big Y.
If your tester has only taken a 37-, 67-, or 111-marker test, upgrading to Big Y (if it fits your budget) can give you deeper insights and make the Guided Plan even more powerful.
5. Strengthen your paper trail.
Build out and document your direct paternal line as far back as possible, and as far down as possible (find all of the descendants of that ancestor that you can). The more complete your genealogy, the more effectively you’ll be able to place your YDNA matches.
6. Join us on Circle.
Our Your DNA Guide Circle community is full of people who love DNA and family history just as much as you do. Ask questions, share discoveries, and get support while you wait.
